Fiber-coupled diode lasers for remote applications
Fiber-coupled diode lasers, or simply fiber lasers, are excellent when the laser and the laser beam source need to be placed in two different locations.
Fiber-coupled diode lasers offer several advantages:
- Circular and homogenized intensity profile, resulting in symmetrical beam quality
- Laser beam source and possible heat sinks can be placed away from the laser's usage location in case of space constraints
- Laser beam source can be easily replaced when defective or when reaching the end of its lifetime without changing the alignment of the measuring station or the system, or needing to dismantle them
How do diode lasers work?
Diode lasers are laser systems where light is generated using semiconductor materials. Ready-to-install semiconductor devices are referred to as laser diodes or emitters. Photons are produced in the semiconductor material of the laser diode through electrical energy, amplified by physical effects, and then emitted by the laser diode.
In this type of application, the modules are also referred to as direct diode lasers.
In many cases, however, it is practical to couple the output of a laser diode into a fiber optic in order to direct the light to the location where it is needed.
Here, the emitted laser light from one or more laser diodes is coupled into a so-called output fiber through various optical components.
Such fibers usually consist of a core and a cladding made from another material, with a different refractive index.
Due to the difference in refractive indices, total internal reflection occurs at the surface of the core, and the light is transported to the fiber's exit.
